Bond, dishy & desi

He is the ultimate spy. Suave, sharp and smooth at the same time. Little surprise then that the latest Bond flick Skyfall, despite having been in the theatres for a while now, is continuing to attract audiences and rave reviews.

But if Ian Flemming were to write the part keeping a desi Bond in mind, we wonder who he would have picked!
Director Kabir Khan, who cast Salman Khan as a RAW agent in his film Ek Tha Tiger, says the actor is apt to become India’s James Bond. He said, “Salman, I think, has the charisma and the sheer presence that a Bond needs.” While Sallu might be Kabir’s choice for the popular character, we ask celebs about their favourites for the role of James Bond, from among current crop of male actors.
Playing James Bond is not an easy job. The effortless swagger, the sex appeal and suave machismo is essential to fit the bill. “ I would love to see Hrithik play the character of the secret agent. With Greek God looks, chiseled body and great acting skills, he would get into the skin of the character. He can be tough and seductive at the same time. Dhoom 2 was a fleeting glimpse of that,” says actor and stand-up comedian Vir Das..
With a great voice and a toned body, Arjun Rampal is also a sound option. “For being James Bond, it is not essential to be a great actor. You just need to have the personality to carry off the role and look great with girls. Arjun Rampal is doing fairly decent movies these days. He would make a good Bond,” says adman Prahlad Kakkar.
Director Rajan Khosa, who directed Gattu, seconds Kabir Khan’s choice of Salman Khan as James Bond. “Bond is bold, beautiful and absolutely derisive. Salman Khan deserves to be given the chance. His don’t-care-a-damn attitude and the ability to pull in the audiences are worth considering. I don’t think we could have a more glamorous Bond,” says Khosa.
“Though SRK is not blessed with the height to play the debonair secret agent, he is immensely popular globally. He has also managed to hold his own in the film Don and Don 2, where the role required action, agility and romance, just like a Bond flick. Besides, he always has the option of spreading his arms wide, lean back and flash his million-dollar smile,” says ex-model and DJ, Barkha Kaul.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
