The business of celeb link-ups
There was a time when being an actress brought with it, its fair share of link-ups. But now, it’s the single men in the industry who are linked with their leading lady — or two. And all of these link-ups serve to keep them in the news even when their films aren’t playing at a marquee near you. Whether it’s Shahid, Ranbir or Ranveer, rumoured link-ups have garnered these actors gain plenty of press even in between projects. So is the buzz surrounding them intentional? Or is it just part and parcel of being eligible young men?
The actors themselves would certainly have you believe they don’t indulge in any such PR exercises. Ranveer Singh — who saw the months between his debut film, Band Baaja Baaraat and his next one, Ladies vs Ricky Bahl, taken up by rumours surrounding his relationship with colleagues Anushka Sharma and Sonakshi Sinha — says, “I did not go around making claims that I was in a relationship with either Anushka or Sonakshi. My career doesn’t run on gossip and link-ups. That’s not my strategy.”
Ranveer may not have fed the media any comments, but as an industry watcher says, on condition of anonymity, “He did make statements that are open to (mis)interpretation, about being attracted to the two actresses and so on and so forth.”
Anushka Sharma admits that link-ups ensure a certain amount of hype. But asserts that actors of calibre do not feel the need to cash in on such publicity stunts. “I know of actors who survive on gossip. But I’d never stoop to that level.”
