Celebration of divine romance
Artist Sukanta Das is one of the many artists to have drawn inspiration from the legendary 12th century poet Jayadeva’s works. In an upcoming solo exhibition “Mesmerized” Sukanta, will showcase around 20 paintings.
Talking about his inspiration, Sukanta says, “Jaydeva’s Gita Govinda attracts us not only for examination, but also for the depiction of feminine charm, descriptions of the nature, dialogues with brevity and emotions enrich the aesthetic experiences of the reader, the audience or even a critic. My works are deeply influenced by the poet.”
Describing his recent works, the artist says, “My works draw parallel from the Basohli style of paintings, which are characterised by vigorous use of primary colours.”
Explaining about the choice of his subject, Sukanta says, “Radha and Krishna stand as epitomes of love in India. It is the subject which can be experimented with. Different people have different perceptions about this theme, as it is deeply entrenched in our culture,” says Sukanta.
One striking feature about the show will be the way nature is used as the backdrop to the theme. “Apart from Radha and Krishna, I wanted to incorporate all the different elements of romance, that are created by nature,” says Sukanta.
His works exude a bewitching charm with a philosophical and spiritual tinge.
