Designer Nida Mahmood protests for Delhi gang rape victim

While fury caused by the brutal Delhi gang rape was still throbbing, what added to the grief was the recent rape of the five-year-old by her neighbour. While the youth took on to the streets and online forum again for solutions, so did celebrities, who voiced their concern for stronger action.

Actor Amitabh Bachchan tweeted, “Yes INDIA FLYING, but INDIA FAILING to stop the atrocities on women on its streets !!”
Young filmmaker Punit Malhotra also remarked, “My blood boils every time I hear of a rape case. This Delhi case is appalling. Rape deserves capital punishment... PERIOD!”
Whereas actor and activist Shabana Azmi expressed her anger and mentioned, “Certainty of conviction will act as a deterrent not severity. But the malaise lies in us as a society that women and children r brutalised.”
Even TV actress Shruti Seth voiced her strong opinion and said, “THIS MAN SHOULD BE STONED TO DEATH.” Sports person Mahesh Bhupathi also wrote, “Put a bullet in his head...Maybe that will put some fear into these barbarians!! Horrified!! #DelhiRape”
City celebrities also demand tougher punishment for the rapists. According to fashion designer Reynu Tandonn, the conversation about the solution for safety of women and now children in the city should begin with stringent laws. “Nothing less than death for rapist would do. That’s the only way rapes in the city can be prevented, rest every thing is shallow talk. Death penalty will act as deterrent in preventing crimes,” she says.
Another city designer, Nikki Mahajan advocates, “It’s very important for the citizens of this country and specially the youth to come forward and put pressure on government. We are the largest democracy in the world and we must set an example in law and order. Any crime against women and children are heinous and should be dealt with strict punishment. The process of educating the society for gender sensitivity will take long but simultaneously we must put strict punishment in place for culprits.”
Adds designer Gautam Gupta, “It seems that the criminals are getting fearless day by day. Only solution for this is capital punishment for them, and that too by fast track courts, without any delay.”
Celebrity tarot card reader Poonam Sethi also says that such heinous acts of crime should be dealt with strict punishment. “Rape is a horrible act of physical and mental assault on women, and men who commit such a crime should receive harsh punishment. I am in the favour of death penalty or other harsh punishment for rapists. And simultaneously we need to educate our sons, boys and society at large to respect women,” she says.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
