Chinese whisper
Everything you thought about the lilting mildness of Chinese tea is shot down when you try the Er Gou Tou (Beijing vodka). It’s a type of distilled liquor made from sorghum, available in various strengths including 112 proof, which is 56% alcohol by volume.
“Er guo tou” in Mandarin means “second distillation” (literally “head of the second pot”), which indicates its level of purity. It is a clear, potent spirit and takes six months to produce.
Says Rohit Malwani, a mixologist, “It is basically is made of sorghum liquor distilled with fresh a rose in a traditional method. It has a permanent fragrant flavour and a slightly sweet taste. It is perfect to have in any season, unlike some other alcoholic beverages, which can be either too heat-causing or too cooling. Try having it with some high class salted meats and even some strong flavoured cheese like gorgonzola.”
