Choose bold or gold
Sporting huge glares and handbags apart, flaunting an outrageous manicure seems to be the ‘it’ trend at the moment. ‘Pampering’ the nails has been taken to another level, with celebrities indulging in nail art as an accessory by itself.
From Blake Lively who sported a velvet manicure for her wedding, to pop star Beyonce who has been seen donning gold-tipped nails, bright, bold and in-your-face seems to be a popular beauty mantra.
According to Yogita Shah, owner of Senza Spa in Chennai, “Nails today have become more than a mere body part. They are the ultimate accessory. People have now seemed to move on from using bright and bold colours. Today they want to indulge themselves. We have many youngsters coming in and getting outrageous manicures done — from donning studs to feathers to even gold nail polish. In a country like ours that’s obsessed with gold, flaunting it on the nails is another way to show off.” O.P.I.’s 18-carat gold leaf top coat is really popular and people are willing to shell out that extra penny for it, she adds.
Boldness seems to be the leitmotif, down to the fingertips. Celebrity nail stylist Sonal Jain says, “Everybody today wants to be bold, and what can be better than giving your nails a makeover. There is nothing impractical about having a caviar manicure or adorning your nails with feathers or diamonds. And with Indian skin tone matching every colour — it’s all up to the person to go bold and bright.” She points out though that only a professional ought to be entrusted with nail care or it might lead to an infection. All the tools should be sterilised,” she stresses.
