Classic comedy enthralls again
The fun-packed Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro is back in cinemas to lure GenY. And the three-decade-old film is riding a new high.
The opening day witnessed about 30-40 per cent footfall that increased to about 65 per cent over the weekend, says Pawan Kumar Mishra, assistant manager, programming at PVR Cinema. “The film has been released along with some much-awaited releases like 1920: Evil Returns, Skyfall, Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana and Ata Pata Lapata. Still, we are witnessing a good response and we are expecting it to increase around Diwali further,” adds Pawan.
The film wasn’t declared a hit in cinemas when it was first released, but it later became a top reckoner among successful comedies. And it remains one, says the lead actor from the film Naseeruddin Shah. “Every release makes the actors anxious about how the film would be received. The re-release gives me the same feeling it did the first time. I am excited to see the audience reaction,” he says, adding that the film was made about 30 years back but is still very relevant. “I don’t think this monsoon of corruption will ever go away.”
Agreeing with Shah, comedian and actor Vir Das says that Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro tops his list of must-watch films. “I always try to bring in a certain level of comedy and intelligence. And this is what this film is all about. It’s an observational film and a satire on social issues that is hard to find these days,” he adds.
