Colour-coded spring for men

This season let the menfolk indulge in some fashion fun. As menswear gets high on style, the classic and a few unconventional looks catches our attention. Salvatore Ferragamo 2013 men’s collection leaves inhibitions behind as neon colours are ready to rule the runway. From neon orange to sunshine yellow as both top and bottom wear, and also as separates, teamed with shoes in happy colours can’t be missed.

The collection redefines men’s approach to the shade card. Gucci too is happy to introduce men to the world of colours, here the choices extend to citrus green and pink. The biggest advocates of metallica shades for men this season are Burberry Prorsum and Versace as they have introduced metallic hues of orange, blue, fuschia in trench coats, slim-fit shirts and jackets.
Designer Sandeep Khapra of Blackberrys, suggests, “The 2013 trends for men will be linen shirts with patch flap pocket options, kurta inspired silhouettes will be making a strong style statement. Khakis in rich hues are a new fashionable menswear staple, but in formal wear the colours are very subtle such as dark wine and dark teal.”
On the colour front, the designer feels, “Colour has shifted to trousers, but these are worn with indigo, white or grey shirt to neutralise the look. The prominent colours for the year will be burgundy, teal, emerald, ochre and rust,” he adds.
But every style guru is not impressed with a colourful fashion parade, Girgio Armani and Bottega Veneta are happy walking a tranquil path with an all white line up of jackets and safari suits. “White will always have a perennial presence in the men’s wardrobe, no matter the trends galore,” comments menswear designer Medhavini Khaitan.
The designer has a string of ideas to pep up men’s clothing, “Watching the response to Dries van Noten’s latest creation, it is certain camouflage prints are all set to make a grand comeback. Fact is such is the domination of colour right now, that not just bright colour blocking, even pastel shades have made the smooth transition into menswear. There’s no escaping the print deluge, right from oriental to the very prominent floral ones, just like Dolce and Gabbana demonstrated on the runway.”
On the other hand, designer Jaya Misra’s exclusive men’s line Nawaz is an amalgamation of both India and the western world. “It has bold colours along with some light ones. Right from royal blue, greasy green and dark brown, it takes you to milder colours like beige, off-white and white. Fabrics dominantly used are georgette, silk, cotton, jacquard, kathan, linen and chanderi,” informs Jaya.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
