Comic heroes to don a new cape
Rewind, reboot and start over Superman, Batman and all you action heroes. We want to know how it all began. DC Comics — home to these superheroes and other stars like Green Lantern, Wonderwoman and Captain Marvel of the Justice League — will be turned back in time into their Issue No 1. Though these kind of makeovers are not new in the film world, comics have been long struggling to get their market share. What better way than to get back to the basics.
While this may attract a whole new generation, there are some like musician Nathan Harris who believe rebooting may not save the day. “I guess it works for the younger generation who aren’t attached to the older versions,” he says, adding, “I wouldn’t buy them because I am attached to the superheroes whose stories I have read over and over again.”
Issue No 1 of the Justice League will revise all these years of continuity in the League’s fictional characters and give them a contemporary twist. If Superman can be part hispanic in his latest avatar, why not even access him on your tablet? Model Karan Medappa says, “If DC wants to capture a new market, it’s best with an e-book version. Carrying 200 comics on your smartphone/tablet is something even I can’t resist!” His favourite superhero getting a makeover works for DJ Anoop. “I have grown up with these characters and it will surely be a trip down nostalgia lane for me,” he says, stating that he would buy this ‘collecter’s special’.
Whether this move will result in a renewed interest in these characters is yet to be seen. Till then, our superheroes need all the power in the world to save them. After 76 years, Batman and Superman will meet... again.
