The countdown begins!

With Christmas and New Year just around the corner, it’s raining parties! Organisers and hosts are racing against time to get their act together for D-Day.
It’s during these times that one can feel extreme anxiety and a few swear that they have heard the panic bells ringing, days in advance.
“I’m planning to have a small party at my farmhouse for Christmas,” says Payal P, self-employed, adding, “Organising an X’mas or New Year party is quite a challenge. This is a day everyone is looking forward to, and you cannot go wrong with it. Naturally, the stress levels are high.”
Many get stressed and a few may even suffer from anxiety attacks, say therapists. “There are a few factors, while organising a party that could lead to stress or anxiety. Like setting up high expectations, last-minute planning and also from the fear of failure,” says Rahul P, counsellor.
The trick is to plan well in advance, state event organisers. “If you are planning for a New Year party, get your to-do list ready a month in advance,” says Preeti K, manager at an event management company. “Delegate work, and make sure you finish your shopping a few days prior to the event.”
To start with, it’s your party and it ought to be your idea, suggest all! “When you are happy about what you are doing, you will naturally take care of it with ease,” says Mythili Sarma, psychologist. Time management, planning, creativity and application are important, as much as not succumbing to peer pressure. “There will be many suggestions flowing in, do have a patient ear and consider them, but plan your party independently. Visualise it as a ‘happy’ event, and it will sure turn out that way,” says Mythili.
‘It should not be boring’, ‘I’ve missed her name on the guest-list’, ‘I hope I’ve not forgotten anything’ — these are a few nagging thoughts that more than often lead to stressful moments! “Stay logical, patient, and be intuitive. It’s a time to rejuvenate and rejoice, a party calls for celebration, and it has to be planned with an infectious zest. No one gets stressed while working with such a frame of mind,” says Mythili.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
