Crack a joke by singing it out

So here’s something about music that’s not to be taken too seriously. Playing some hilarious foot-tapping music are “Alien Chutney”, a band all set to perform in the capital tonight, to give delhiites a dose of laughter.
What makes them alien is the choice of their lyrics. Says stand-up comedian Vir Das, who is the guitarist and the vocalist of the band, “Our lyrics are very retarded. When you’re successful artistes, you can take certain liberties on stage, and this is one of them. Our lyrics are about the little things in life that I observe. I recently wrote a song called Man boob when I was stuck at Delhi airport and I noticed that men in Delhi have these big chests, so I wrote pappe you’re a dude if you’ve got man boobs. The whole idea is to make people laugh.”
For someone who was the lead vocalist of Venkateswara College’s rock band, says, he loves to experiment with lyrics and music while performing. “Being a vocalist in my college’s rock band, do you think with age and wisdom, I would let these dreams die?” he quips.
About their choice of songs, and lyrics, Vir says, “Once you’ve watched Alien Chutney perform, I can promise you that many things that you took for granted in life will never be the same again. For instance, we have a song called Delhi Girls. This one came about when I came to Delhi some time back for a show, and I realised that Delhi girls are getting prettier.”
He further goes on to say, “So I tweeted saying “what do you think about Delhi girls” so I got about 10,000 responses. According to the responses, I worked on the lyrics.”
If you ask, other band members on how they are driven to perform such funny lyrics, you will find out that this band actually intends to be laughed at. “I think music should be taken less seriously in a band. We’re just having fun singing, instead of giving the audience something boring. We want people to enjoy life. We sit down together and make a few tracks, and it takes time to figure out which kind of music will sound humorous with which track,” says band member Ashish.
Guess what, among the many hilarious lyrics that the band comes up with, there are some to ease your moods in times of distress too.
Says Kaizad Gherda, who’s on vocals and piano, “We’ve had songs which target different genres of music, and now we’ve come up with songs on issues relating to real life, and given them a funny twist. For instance, we have a song called Nafrat Hai with music notes like that of a love song and the melody is lovely. So you can just listen to such a song and make fun about the little things in life and laugh about them. It’s more about laughing at yourself. So crack a joke by singing it out.”
The band is performing in the capital tonight at Lodi-The Garden Restaurant at Lodi Road, 8.30 pm onwards
