Cricket in a spot leaves fans disappointed

A real sportsperson plays for his passion for the sport as well as his country. But the recent spot-fixing allegations in Indian Premier League 6 have left many cricket fans disillusioned and disappointed. While Rajasthan Royals players S. Sreesanth, Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan are under the scanner, sportspersons from various quarters say that such incidents dent the spirit of the game badly.

“Sports are all about thrill and competitive spirit. Cricket fans in India follow each and every ball till the end. They think that sports are clean and incorruptible. However, these incidents affect the sports spirit. Fans feel cheated and the whole idea of the game and fair competition suffers. It feels like instead of real matches you have been watching reality shows,” says India boxer Akhil Kumar.
Polo player Adhiraj Singh also agrees that spot-fixing is just like any other crime and the accused should be punished accordingly. He cites the example of cyclist Lance Armstrong, who was stripped of his seven Tour de France titles and a lifetime ban was imposed on him. “Such incidents are not new. There are always people who look for easy money and fame. Corruption in sports is very demoralising for fans. And we need to find ways to stop it,” adds Adhiraj.
Delhi & District Cricket Association vice chairperson, Chetan Chauhan hopes that this incident doesn’t bring down the morale of other players and fans. “Many are demanding a ban on IPL. Fans are definitely angry but IPL has also given many young players a chance to prove their mettle.I believe fans are mature enough to understand that despite the charges levelled against some IPL players not everybody is corrupt,” adds Chetan.
