Cupid makes men go under the knife

When Cupid strikes, we do things least expected of us. And in the case of men, it is more so, as days before Valentine’s Day, dermatology experts are registering a rise in the footfall of male clients seeking skin treatments.
Experts tell us that there is almost a 40% rise in the number of men asking for treatments. While laser hair removal is a huge hit among men, there are many who ask for a treatment called Dermal Fillers.

“This is used to correct depressions on the skin. Dermal fillers are basically a type of soft tissues made of different types of materials of synthetic, man-made and natural categories used to inject into the skin for enhancing appearances, and relief from problems like wrinkles, folds or depressions such as scars etc. The procedure is very quick, it just takes 30 minutes or less with rarest cases of side-effects,” informs Dr Indu Tolani, Dermatologist.
While botox is almost passé, what’s interesting to note is that men are increasingly taking up other treatments which are not so popular but promise quick results.
“Many guys are getting cautious about their physical appearance. With each year the numbers keep increasing from 15 to 20 per cent. Skin tightening treatment called Thermage is really popular. It is the only non-invasive procedure that helps tighten and contour your skin in a single treatment —with no surgery, no injections, and little to no downtime. It stimulates your body’s natural renewal of collagen, which creates subtle, natural looking results on and off the face,” says Dr Simal Soni, dermatologist, Three Graces.
Hydro facial, a new advance in non-laser skin resurfacing, is also proving a popular choice of men. “Hydro Facial is the only hydradermabrasion procedure that combines cleansing, exfoliation, hydration and antioxidant protection simultaneously, resulting in clearer, more beautiful skin with no discomfort or downtime. The treatment is soothing, moisturising, non-invasive and non-irritating,” adds Dr Soni.
Apart from the new ones, there are many old treatments which are getting popular among men by the day. “In the past 14 years, I have seen a vast change in the acceptance of treatments like Botox and dermal fillers like Juvederm. Many men are coming with queries to us. They usually come for frown lines and crow’s feet. They also come for hydro facials, glow and fresh look is all that everybody wants now. The new treatments that are gaining popularity are beard shaping, laser hair reduction and they also wish to get rid of double chin problem,” says Dr Chiranjeev Chabbra, dermatologist, Skin Alive.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
