‘Curiosity opens doorways of the mind’
It was an evening filled with some witty comments and some clever exchanges with the audience as Swapan Seth gave a talk on ‘curiosity’ at Moon River Salon recently.
An author and founding member of advertisement agency Equus, Swapan shared some interesting insights into why he feels that curiosity is one of the best things that anyone can be bestowed with.
“Curiosity is something that opens the doorways of your minds. If you are not curious, you cannot stay relevant. And being irrelevant is the worst thing that can happen to a person,” shares Swapan.
Talking about his reasons for being curious, he adds, “I am curious for the same reason — because of my insecurity of being irrelevant, because of fear. When you have two teenage sons, you’re mortified about the fact that one day they’ll turn to you and say that you don’t know anything. Hence, I try to stay up with times, so if they ever ask me something like, ‘Dad, have you heard Get Lucky’, I’d be like, ‘Of course, I have. Why wouldn’t I have heard him?’”
Being curious is one thing and the other is feeding your curiosity. “I wake up every day at five in the morning and till 10 o’clock, I do nothing but feed my curiosity through Internet. But I never surf, as I always know what I am looking for. Apart from that, I read a book every day. And I only read non-fiction. I have never read classics or a fiction in my life except Tony Parsons. Apart from that, I make it a point to learn at least three new things every day,” he concludes.
