Dance together to live together
Recently, a group of 26 youngsters, most of them working professionals with no prior formal dance training, came together as part of a global flashmob, breaking into a Brazilian Zouk dance performance. It lasted for five to seven minutes and the dancers performed to the number, Rehab, by Rihanna at a popular mall in the city.
Called the international Zouk Flash Mob (IZMF), the event saw Delhi as the latest addition to its list. The flash mob intended to spread the message of propagating love, unity and peace.
Zouk is a romantic partner dance, that evolved from the Lambada of the early nineties, and is influenced by other dances such as Salsa, Tango, Rumba and Forro.
As FM trainer and instructor, Anuj Gupta shared, “Through this flash mob that was held across 100 cities in the world on the same day, we wanted to show that if it’s possible to dance together, we can even live together peacefully.”
Siddhartha Maitra, one of the participants said, “The objective behind this mob was to reiterate the belief that it is possible for people around the world to work together in peace, with no commercial objective, and enjoy the spirit of togetherness.”
Elaborating on the event Anuj said, “The event was completely non-commercial and no fees was charged for training or participation.” The idea of this ‘global’ flash mob originated in Perth, Australia by Zouk enthusiast Bob Kelly.
Another IZFM trainer, Shalini Sen sumed up, “Zouk dancing gives sensuality a whole new dimension. It’s just you, your partner and the music. That’s Zouk. It’s not what’s going on outside. It’s about your inner passions.”
