Whether it’s Harajuku where youngsters dress in a variety of funky styles experimenting from gothic to hi-tech, or creations of masters like Yohji Yamamoto and Rei Kawakubo, the Japanese are the first in almost everything. It is a land known for innovation, technology and like Indians they value and celebrate their rich cultural past.
City fashionistas were excited about the showcasing of Japanese designers Takuya Yoshimura, Hideaki Horie and Keita Hanaoka recently at the Samsaara store, but the event got cancelled at the last minute. “This has been done as a mark of respect for those who lost their lives in the earthquake that rocked Japan,” said Sanjay Kapoor of Genesis Colors.
Sanjay adds that it was appropriate to cancel the show keeping in mind the sentiments of the designers who had actually come to showcase their creations at the Lakme Fashion Week in Mumbai.
“We wanted to give Delhi a taste of real fashion as Japan is known as a hub of great style. But we felt we needed to respect their need to be back home with their families and also this is not the right time to hold a showing, when their friends are grieving for their lost ones,” he added.
Designer Ranna Gill, who has been working with Japanese buyers for many years, says that it was a good decision. “Everytime I look at the pictures of devastation I am paralysed with fear. It is such a terrible thing to happen, nature’s fury took its toll on many families, some have lost almost everything. I must say that the Japanese are the most cultured and honest people and my experience with them has been fantastic. They are the most methodical and disciplined people who understand and value Indian crafts and love our embroideries,” she added.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
