Deck up or dress down?
The current ‘it’ couple of Hollywood, Ashton Kutcher and girlfriend Mila Kunis, were recently spotted by the paparazzi in their tracksuits, walking their dog in the neighbourhood. While Ashton looked very much in love, the normally well turned out Mila, was seen sporting a clean and fresh look — sans any make up whatsoever.
This sent the media into a tizzy, with many reports claiming that this relationship was surely past the rebound stage as Mila felt comfortable enough not to dress up around her casually hot boyfriend.
While most couples embark on relationships with the dress-to-impress mentality, that imperative gradually takes a back seat as they begin to get more serious about each other. Model Arun Venkatraman points out, “I prefer women with a fresh look, but in the case of celebrities, I think there is a certain pressure to be turned out well all the time and to look well-groomed. Yes, initially people do dress to impress, but that becoming a defining point in your relationship really depends on who you date.”
The minimalistic look is what enhances a woman’s natural features and beauty, feels fashion designer and choreographer Prasad Bidappa. “The classic kaajal and lipstick combo always works. It is important for a woman not to put too much make up on her skin,” he explains. However, dressing for an occasion or a party isn’t make up surely a necessity? “For parties, there is no harm in dressing up with a little bit of eye shadow and foundation. Also, spring cleaning for make up is a MUST — you can always spot aunties in the crowd when you see that they are wearing lipstick from the ‘70s,” he laughs.
Women too commit long-term to a guy who can get beyond the fact that she doesn’t wake up or go to sleep painted — there are bound to be bad hair days and dark circles once in a way. Actress Janani Iyer says, “Most relationships start with physical attraction. But women usually tend to look for a mature guy who can see beyond looks and create a more meaningful relationship. When a couple is truly comfortable with each other, the need to impress disappears. And in my opinion I strongly believe that men still like their women sans make up.”
Hockey player Adam Sinclair thinks that women who are excessively made up are a definite turn off. “No guy would want a future with a woman who dresses up to convince someone that she’s something that she’s actually not,” he asserts. “Like any other husband, I am possessive about my wife, and I always make sure both of us are dressed well, depending on the occasion and the crowd that we are expected to mingle with. Thankfully, she is a casual dresser and goes all out with make up only if the occasion demands it. I like it that she’s got a very comfortable sense of style — be it her clothes or make up.”
