From making a mark in Indian cricket, 24-year-old Abhishek Kapur, a cricketer-turned-model from Delhi, is ready to start a new inning in showbiz. The young and talented actor has already done around 50 TV and print advertisements and worked with new stars like Alia Bhatt.

Born to a hockey player, choosing sports was a natural choice for Abhishek, who started playing cricket when he was 10. He mentions, “I went to Modern School, and studied at Kirori Mal College, DU. I have also represented Delhi Under 17, 19, 22 and have played in Ranji Trophy. I was the captain of Delhi under-22 in 2010. Other than cricket, I also have a black belt degree in Taekwondo.”
Speaking about the shift from sports field to the glam world, Abhishek says, “At times in life one needs to be practical. My decision was very spontaneous and due to some personal reasons I preferred to shift from cricket to modelling. I am still a sportsman first and there is nothing negative that I am taking from it to this field. I have no regrets, as I had worked very hard in the field of cricket for 14 years, but I will definitely be actively involved in cricket and sports soon.”
For entering the movies and TV world, Abhishek says he will be taking up classes very soon, but the projects he has got so far were by his own merit. He says, “I have not taken any formal training for getting into showbiz. It was very gradual as I had started by participating in competitions held online, and I used to analyse and see a lot of videos and works of established actors. I was very camera shy at first but the interest and passion made me learn about my plus and negative points. As of now, moving to Mumbai is the biggest and the most important step. I have been auditioning for films and TV and a couple of things are in the pipeline.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
