Delhi chicas to rock LFW

All prepared to impress the fashion moguls at the Lakmé Fashion Week Summer/Resort 2013, Delhi-based designer Ragini Ahuja and accessories designers Kaabia and Sasha are beaming with confidence. After months of hard work, the designers chosen in Gen Next category of the contest are prepared to test the waters.

A fine illustrator and fan of appliqué work, Ragini Ahuja, 24, is ready to experiment at her debut show. “I have tried to show fearlessness through my collection. It’s all about comfortable silhouettes with lot of appliqué work and illustrations on the clothes. I have used a lot of crisp chanderi fabric and designed them in high contrasting colours,” says Ragini.
Her collection of eight ensembles consists of shirts, skirts, maxis and a couple of saris. “In terms of colour scheme, I have coupled contrasting colours like cream with black. And, in terms of style, I have done a lot of structured drapes, sheer jackets with exaggerated shoulders and detachable collars and cuffs, which is my favourite style,” says Ragini.
“While running my label Ikai, I had to be a little restrictive keeping buyers’ demands in mind. Now I have got the chance to experiment and do some different stuff for the ramp. I have done pretty much everything I wanted to do,” she adds.
Just like Ragini, sisters Kaabia and Sasha Grewal are also ready with their “different collection.” The accessory designer duo, who run the label Outhouse, will be showcasing at Lakmé Fashion Week for the second time. “Though we have showcased our collection earlier, we are still nervous. Earlier, the competition was not so tough, it is more difficult now,” says Sasha.
Talking about their collection of statement pieces including necklaces, bracelets and body ornaments in brass, the sisters share that it is influenced by Paris and Spain.
“We travelled to Paris and Spain recently, and the collection that we are going to showcase is inspired by the individual ethos of these countries. Paris is famous for its architecture, so you would see that influence in our neckpieces. Spain is more artistic and colourful and you would see its traces in our patterns of exotic insects in different colours,” mentions Sasha.
Kaabia adds, “The collection is not going to be flowery this time as we have tried to create some bold statement pieces. We have also experimented in terms of colour schemes by infusing soft neon and pastel colours like lime and cream mixed with a lot of Swarovski and ivory.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
