‘Delhi film buffs are special’

He is a seasoned theatreperson, but knew nothing of the art and craft of filmmaking. Even then, Manav Kaul’s debut, Hansa managed to impresses the critics and is ready to woo the audiences. The film is based on the young filmmakers experiences in the hilly terrains of Uttaranchal.

“This is an experimental and brings forth the discomfort that lies behind the beauty of the mountains told through a brother-sister duo. The film is humorous and poignant at the same time,” he says, adding that he has seen the village life closely as he keep on travelling to remote areas for my writing sessions. “Casting for the film, including the central characters was done from the village,” he says. The film bagged the Best International Critics
Award and Best Audience Award at this year’s Osians Cine Fest. Since, Manav has already started work on two films — Pathagat and Mamtaz Bhai Patangwala. Does he intend to do full-time filmmaking and join the bandwagon of the offbeat filmmakers? “Theatre is my first love, and films are another form of art. I will only do kind of films which will really appeal to me. And the stories have to be universal,” says Manav, who’s born in Kashmir and call the entire country his home.
“The line between the offbeat and mainstream is blurring. Still, we haven’t explored the intelligent audience of the country,” he adds. Manav see Delhi emerging as the new film capital of the country. “There are many filmmakers from Delhi and they have lot of stories to tell from here. Also, Delhi film buffs are different, in fact special,” he says.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
