‘Dented, painted’ creates furore
When the entire country is talking about women’s safety and are protesting vehemently to make a point, son of the President of the country, Abhijeet Mukherjee seems to have a different view. The MP claimed that the women participating in the protests are “pretty women who were dented and painted”.
“This is almost like the Pink Revolution. These women who are protesting have no contact with ground reality. These pretty women, dented and painted, who come for protests are not students,” he said in an interview.
And his comment has created a big furore. Stand up comedian Vasu Ritu Primlani thinks his remark is a typical objectification of women. She retorts, “Ask him if he waxes his women before he gets into them? We expect men to be concerned about women’s safety, not point and laugh at the protestors. Abhijit is just a bystander, an onlooker, a roadside Romeo.”
However, photographer Anshika Varma thinks there’s no point getting caught up in such things. “What’s important is to ensure that we learn to filter out the riffraff from the substantial matter and keep our focus on the issue at hand. I think even he cannot really explain what he said,” she quips.
