Desi divas dress to impress

The Cannes film festival 2013 was special for India. Apart from the fact that the largest Indian delegation till date was present at the French Riviera to celebrate 100 years of Indian cinema, the sartorial choices of the leading ladies of Indian cinema at the red carpet got the global fashion fraternity to sit up and take notice.

Be it Sonam’s white saree with long jacket or floral gown, Vidya’s maroon lehenga or the Mughal princess look, their naths (nose rings) or Aishwarya’s golden sari, much was discussed and reported. We find out from designers who aced the ‘desi girl’ look.
Vidya epitomised the quintessential Indian look in Sabyasachi’s saris, lehengas and rounded it off with an anarkali at the closing ceremony. While some of her red carpet dresses got a thumbs up, the fashion police trashed others. “I loved Vidya in her most simple sari — the ivory one with golden border and embroidery that she wore for the jury photo-call. The sari was draped very well and reflected Vidya’s strong personality. However, high-neck blouses are not meant for women who are well-endowed. So that could have been ditched for a low neck blouse,” says Paras of the designer duo, Paras and Shalini. He also loved her chiffon, floral red sari with white pearl necklace.
Sonam Kapoor has been a red carpet favourite. This time she was at her best in the white and gold Anamika Khanna sari and her famous ‘nath’ at The Great Gatsby premiere. “It was such an innovative ensemble. The white lace sari with gold border sported with a long embellished jacket was truly a fusion of the East and West. But personally, I would have preferred a slightly brighter colour over white,” says designer Niki Mahajan.
Seconds designer Payal Jain, “The entire concept was great but the nath was the icing on the cake. It added drama and was very traditional. The red lips also accentuated the look.”
Hot mommy Aishwarya Rai Bachchan was back at Cannes, this time sans her post-pregnancy flab. “Aishwarya looked ravishing in the full-sleeved, intricately embroidered, floor length Indo-Western dress by Abu Jani-Sandeep Khosla styled with a blush clutch. Although heavy, it had a nice summery confluence of colours. Her wavy hair and dewy makeup just added more appeal,” gushes Gauri Karan.
Actress Nandita Das has been known for her passion for bright colours and always manages to make her presence felt. This year was no different. “Nandita came as breath of fresh air. The sunny yellow silk kurta paired with a churidaar and a tissue dupatta looked classy. And she completed the look with long jhumkas and a red bindi,” smiles designer Rina Dhaka.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
