If you are a fan of American sitcoms, you surely have been missing Mindy Lahiri, Danny Castellano and the rest of The Mindy Project gang. Well, here is good news! The second season of the popular comedy series that tracks the life of a hardworking, young doctor who is successful in her career but unlucky in love and needs to get her personal life back on track will air soon. The lead role in the show is played by Mindy Kaling (originally Vera Mindy Chokalingam), an Indian-origin American actress, comedian, writer who also produces and directs shows.
We have not seen a lot of shows with Indians as the lead characters. How does it feel to be a part of such a show? “I don’t really think of my work in political terms. I would love if I could be a great example. I don’t feel daunted by my origin as I think there are other actors who have been part of this field and are doing exceedingly well. I’m not worried about it,” says Kaling. Her first official television appearance was in an episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm in 2005.
Talking about her journey, she says, “I went to America with the intention of being a writer. I sold a script to CBS but not much was happening on that front. And then I began auditioning for pilot seasons. The Mindy Project just seemed so different. Eventually, I also started writing a few episodes of it, directed and produced it also.” So is she planning to come to India anytime soon? “Having my roots in India, I would like to visit the country, maybe sometime in the future,” she concludes.
The first season of The Mindy Project is currently being aired on Comedy Central, 11 pm, Monday to Thursday.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
