‘Designing feels liberating’

The old world charm
I have an obsession with the Old World and Mary Antoinette has been my style icon for the way she lived her life — in absolute decadence. My inspirations are Christian Dior, Audrey Hepburn for her timeless style, Valentino, John Galliano (who retained the name and reputation of the original Christian Dior even after imbibing his own glamorous aesthetics to it), and lastly, Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla for the royal elegance with which they present even the simplest garments.
family and fashion
I am very close to my father Sajjid Khan, who has actually worked with some of the most reputed names in the international fashion world such as Gianfranco Ferre, Giorgio Armani, Valentino, Escada, Elie Saab and Roberto Cavalli. My father's sister was one of the first people to begin the embroidery business in India to supply to international designers, which dad then took over. While working as an assistant to him, I travelled extensively, discovering the opportunities in the business as well as my passion for European luxury and style.

b’Town before Label
It is very flattering to have all these beautiful girls from Bollywood appreciate and wear my clothes. The first person I ever designed for was Sonam Kapoor for the Simi Garewal Show. This was way before I opened my store. Sonam who had already by that time created a name for herself as a fashion icon encouraged me to start my own label. The first time that I showcased my designs was at this year’s summer edition of the Lakme Fashion Week in March and by the time I had already designed for the likes of Kareena and Karisma Kapoor, Jacqueline Fernandez, Katrina Kaif and Alia Bhatt.

My dream
It has only been a year since my boutique launched and when I do open another one in India, it would be Delhi. In the future I would like to make my label international and it is my dream to open my very own boutique in Paris!

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
