Devotee strums spiritual tunes
In the 70’s, Rubettes was a popular rock group founded by John Richardson and tasted international fame. John and his group managed to notch up 30 million single sales and 15 chart entries. However, he renounced all the glitz and glamour in the 80’s to go on a spiritual journey.
“I experienced certain esoteric things in life and my quest for an inward journey became intense. Around this time, I came in touch with the Bhagvad Gita and became Krishna’s devotee,” says John. He also took up the name of Jayadev, based on Jayadeva Goswami, who wrote Geet Govinda. With his musical background, he took it upon himself to serve Lord Krishna through music. Thus, was born the idea of Rock-Kirtan.
Jaydev sings bhajans and kirtans devoted to Krishna accompanied by guitars, and other instruments. “I try and involve the audience through the mantra choir, wherein the audience chants certain familiar mantras” he adds.
Jaydev presented India’s first Mantra Choir at the Select City Walk at the Holy Cow Music Festival, keeping in mind the recent brutal gangrape case in the city.
