Divas’ date with vintage beauties

They can glam up and at the same time can handle their role behind the wheel with finesse. We check out with the Delhi party hoppers about their fascination with the vintage cars at the “All Women Power Rally.”

The city was abuzz with socialites and entrepreneurs gathered to celebrate “The Luxury of Parking Safe” as the two Multi Level Car Parks- Capitol Point and South Square under DLF and NDMC hosted an All Women’s Vintage Car Rally in association with Kanchan Kapoor.
“Like wine, cars too get better with time,” says the host, Kanchan Kapoor.
But why a women only car rally? “I want them to feel strong and go back home with a sporty and classy feeling,” she says.
Ownership of a vintage car sets an image of glamour, prestige and a status symbol that shows you can afford its high maintenance, thinks socialite Rooma Sekhri.
Sekhri says, “My dad owned a Baby Austin. I would also definitely love to own one for myself. I wish there were some new modern cars with vintage looks and no maintenance issues. Most of these old ‘beauties’ need more maintenance than our average modern machines, and even more so if the car hasn’t seen regular use for a while.”
She adds, “Although vintage cars can become a headache sometime, having a well-preserved and in running condition classic is something a true car aficionado can be truly proud of. For those who are interested in having one, be sure that you are ready for all the care and maintenance vintage cars demand.”
Another young and sexy participant Gaayatri Dhawan shares her love for the classic cars and says, “Vintage cars are not just about sophistication, class, an air of style; such cars are a part of history and their presence lends character to an otherwise world full of similarities and drone like fleet of cars.”
One of the participants at the rally, fashion designer Charu Parashar says, “Call me a feminist, but I’m totally against the cliché that women are bad drivers. They are not. I have seen many men displaying berserk driving skills on the roads. Women are just underrated.”
Charu believes holding such rallies is yet another mode of expressing the issue of gender empowerment. The socialite although finds vintage cars stylish and elegant, but she calls herself “a lover of speed” and jokingly says, “I am too young to think of owning a vintage at this age.”
Another participating rallyist, socialite Sangeeta Mehta says, “Whether it’s the sound the engine makes, or the unique automotive styling of a bygone decade, classic cars offer that little bit of magic that modern cars might sometimes lack.”
Sharing her experience, Sangeeta said, “Riding one of the oldest vintage with my close friends including Neelam Pratap Rudy and others was wonderful. It almost reminded me of the bygone era. There was no horn in our car, but looking at the Delhi ‘beauties’ riding classic cars on crowded roads, we conveniently carved our way.”
Deepa Chawla, a Delhi socialite who has a driving experience of more than 25 years says, “It’s great because such events help one meet like-minded people. It is a great way of socialising and at the same time standing up for a cause. I look forward to more of such women-centric rallies.” Although a fan of classic cars, Deepa loves driving her BMW-5 series. She says, “Design, comfort, looks and safety is what I care for in cars.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
