Divine intervention

It seems like the Delhi government has run out of excuses for the Commonwealth Games, or else how would one explain chief minister (CM) Sheila Dikshit’s comment recently, “Aisa lagta hai ke Indra devta humse kuch naraaz hain. (It seems the rain god is unhappy with us.) I will appeal to him to bring some sunshine so that work can be completed.” If the rain stopped, she said, work would be wound up by September 10-15.
Yet another deadline and it’s not funny any longer. Barely a month to go and work is yet to be completed. This is the third deadline set by the chief minister for removing debris. In July, she had allegedly set August 10 as the deadline, which was extended to August 31, and now to September 10-15.
We spoke to a Delhiites, who do not find any humour in the above-mentioned comment.
Says homemaker Ruchi Kapur Mishra, “I guess Dikshit should have appealed to the rain god before the preparations for the CWG began. Then, maybe he would have spared us. Looks like he’s angry now, and she could sing to him few lines from Three Idiots, ‘Give me some sunshine, don’t give me rains, give me another chance so I work for Commonwealth Games’.”
It’s for all to see, with roads caving in, debris all around and deadlines being pushed to the brink, in a situation like this, one expects the leader to show the way, rather than look up for guidance.
Avers Prachi Joshi, who works with an MNC, “I guess the CM must thank God for giving them an excuse for not completing pending jobs for the Games. This will come in handy after the Games. I didn’t expect this comment from her, in times of crisis, one expects a leader to take responsibility and move ahead, not give statements like this.”
Agrees Sumit Gupta, businessman, “Delhi was supposed to be ready a year back. This time was to be utilised for final touch-ups. We no longer have time on hand to do that, I feel instead of lamenting, we must push them to finish the work, at least try to. Now it is about national pride, it’s not fair to pull down the government, when they are trying to complete projects. We can evaluate them post-Games, when everything will be in front of our eyes.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
