Dreams can come true
Students of Class XII will have heard about Raghav Mahto. After all he figures in their National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) text book called Bharat Mein Samajik Parivartan Evam Vikas (Social change and development in India). His story is an inspirational one as he — while still in his teens — came up with the idea of launching a radio station.
Success mantra
Recalling his old radio transmission kit “that cost me around Rs 50,” Mahto says that this was a huge sum for him even then. The apparatus was fitted onto an antenna attached to a bamboo pole on a neighbouring three-storeyed hospital. And hey presto! Raghav FM Mansoorpur 1 was born!
The station played songs, promoted social messages on polio and AIDS, and operated like a community radio service in the Muzaffarpur, Vaishali and Saran districts of Bihar disseminating native news and views in the local lingo. And this proved what the radio was actually meant for — an empowering tool for the rural masses.
Living your dreams
Born into a family of agricultural labourers, who were too poor to provide him with education, Mahto never let any shortcomings come in his way. “I enjoy the support of my family, friends and people from across the state and nation today,” acknowledges this resident of Mansoorpur village in Vaishali district, Bihar.
Today, Mahto has just finished an assignment as the Project Head of a community radio station in the Ajmer district of Rajasthan.
He is back home and looking forward to doing something that would help his village folk. All going to show that your dreams can be accomplished despite the fact that you may live in a shack with meagre resources!
