At DU some food for thought
The Nirulas and Spic Macys, which had been food havens for most students of University of Delhi (DU) north campus, will soon transform into coffee houses run by the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC).
The contract for both outlets expired in October and DU-VC, Professor Dinesh Singh has not just denied extending the contracts, but also handed the job to the railways. The move of giving the canteen tender to IRCTC has elicited mixed reactions from students.
According to DUSU cultural secretary, Ashok Bhagat, students will be immensely benefited, as food prices would be subsidised and so will be affordable by one and all. “About the menu, nothing has been decided as of now and whatever happens will be in the best interest of students,” he said.
Students prefer quality over subsidy, says NSUI spokesperson Amrish Ranjan Pandey. “IRCTC’s catering on the trains has been so bad that there have been many instances of food poisoning. We can’t take a chance here,” he said.
And students have decided what they must do. Bhagat assures of frequent inspections by DUSU to check the quality of the food served. A few like Jyoti Parmeshwaran don’t care much, “Especially, till other popular joints are around,” she says.
