Dug up roads delay admission-seekers
The construction work for the Commonwealth Games going on in the Delhi University, North Campus has made negotiating one’s way to DU a nightmare for many aspirants. Dug up holes, heaps of mud and other construction materials like iron rods, bricks and wooden cable containers, has made commuting difficult.
Despite leaving her home in Dwarka before nine in the morning and reaching North Campus Metro Station by 10 am, Namrata Sharma found it hard to reach Hindu College on time. She had to stand in a long queue to submit the OMR form that she bought and filled a day prior.
“I left early so that I don’t have to stand in the long queue, but the traffic jams in the campus were a dampener. It took me more than an hour to reach college from the Metro station, as the roads were blocked,” she says.
“Besides, private vehicles add to traffic chaos. I heard that private vehicles would not be allowed during the admission season. But many cars are plying in the campus. Sadly, there is no traffic patrolling,” rues Madhavi Mishra, an aspirant, who also faced problems because of the blocked roads. She says traffic cops should have followed the rule they made.
Students who visited the campus in their own vehicles are also not happy. Manisha Awasthi, an aspirant who came from Patel Nagar in her car, says she was prepared to park her car near the Metro station. “I read the report and was ready to commute by rickshaw or auto on reaching the campus. But no one stopped me,” she says.
She further added that the construction work caused problems while driving.
Even rickshaw pullers, who provide the most effective means of transportation in the campus, are upset. Says Omprakash, a rickshaw wallah, “They have dug up roads at so many different places and left it like that for more than six months,” he says, adding that many a time they have to ask commuters to get off the rickshaw at turning points or near the half-constructed paths as they fear the rickshaw may tumble and the riders could get hurt in the process.
