Dunno Y... makes its way internationally
This was one dostana that was always hidden under wraps. Two men could be âgood friendsâ and pledge their âbrotherlyâ love for each other in Bollywood. The doosra admi in a manâs life was always a buddy, never his lover. There was no happiness in being gay because men were afraid to come out of the closet. Homophobia ran deep in society. And since Bollywood mirrors social mores, gay characters were part of a college campus story.
Their effeminate adas would include blowing coy kisses at the hero, who would in a show of masculinity, threaten to beat him up. The nazuk creature would flutter his eyelashes and scoot. But it was really left to offbeat cinema. producers who were hungry for fresh subjects to do the honours. Movies like Mahesh Dattaniâs Mango Souffle
that advertised itself as the first full length Indian gay film and My Brother Nikhil sensitively portrayed the angst of the new-age gay character.
Madhur Bhandarkar explored explored a gay guyâs dilemma in Page 3. In Honeymoon Travels, a married guy discovers at the end of his honeymoon that he is actually gay. However, it was Dostana which suddenly made âgayâ films cool. This was meant to be a humorous take on male bonding with gayish overtones. And Karan Johar threw in a couple âbuttâ enticing scenes and a full blown smooch between the lead characters. But with their backs turned towards the camera, it was clear Karan had lost his spunk.
Bollywoodâs latest flick, Dunno Y...Na Jaane Kyun is all set to be screened IFFI, London, in August. With the international media lapping it up the film being chosen at the âI View New York Film Festivalâ, winning an award and the closing ceremony of Kashish Mumbai International Queer Film Festival, there is absolutely no stopping Sanjay Sharmaâs Dunno Y... Na Jaane Kyun. The latest achievement is that the film has been selected at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in London. The film marks the comeback of Zeenat Aman who stars alongside Helen playing her daughter-in-law. We sure Dunno Y, how this film will fare, but it sure is a bold awakening.
