Sachin’s contribution for Deccan Chronicle’s 75th anniversary celebrations

Hyderabad artist Sachin Jaltare has been in the industry for the past 20 years, but his first job after graduating from Nagpur University was that of an illustrator.

Looking back, the 45-year-old artist recounts his journey, “In the beginning, it was purely a matter of making a living. In 1991, I had come to Hyderabad from Maharashtra looking for a job and worked with an ad agency for around six years. Times were very different back then and the prospects of artists making money weren’t very bright.”
Talking about the current scene, he says, “Over the course of time, the interest in art in the city has increased. People take it more seriously now, especially the young and upcoming artists. They are experimenting with different techniques and textures, which is a positive step for the evolution of the art culture.”
Considering his own struggles, it’s not surprising to see the artist keen on helping and encouraging young aspiring artists. “Age notwithstanding, the young artists nowadays are very serious about their work and I will certainly help and encourage them at every given opportunity,” he says.
Besides guidance from a senior artist during his early days, family support is also what’s kept Sachin going all these years. “Even though my father never acquired a formal art education, he is also an artist. He told me not give up on my passion. I was good in science, but he encouraged me to take up a career in art,” he recalls. “My son is inclined towards music and though my wife does a bit of art, she focuses on the home so that I can concentrate on my work. It goes without saying that I wouldn’t have come this far without their support,” he says gratefully.
Greatly influenced by spirituality, many of Sachin’s paintings are various interpretations of Shiva and Shakti. “My interest in spirituality began when I was searching for my own identity and was trying to understand who I am. As an artist, my work keeps evolving. Right now, it can be defined as figurative abstracts with a focus on a Supreme Being or consciousness,” he explains.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
