Exotic themes woo freshers

After the crazy cut-offs and admission rush, freshers’ parties are ruling fuchchas’ minds these days. As seniors are hosting parties with fun themes, first year students are all geared up to flaunt stylish makeovers and have total masti. While few colleges already had their “official” departmental freshers parties, many are still finalising the dates and themes.
Giving it a floral twist, it was hawa-Hawaii time for Gargi College as the theme for their freshers party was “Hawaii”. Students flaunted garlands, bright flip-flops and trendy hats. “It is heartening to see that freshers have put in a lot of effort to dress up for the occasion. We all cheered them as they competed for titles such as hawa Hawaii, sizzling satrangi, Caribbean kudi etc,” says Niharika Khanna, 2nd year student, Gargi College.
And then there were popstars ruling Lady Shri Ram College, as History Dept celebrated with theme “Popstars”. “Students were dressed up as Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson, Shubha Mudgal. We also had a parcel game, where freshers were given a dare task to perform, followed by a dance party. Later, we had an introduction session and presentation. The presentation was about the list of things that seniors have planned for freshers in the coming year, which includes a trip to Maharashtra, talk session, recreational and heritage walks etc,” informs Shubhi Dhupar, 2nd year student.
The other departments in LSR too had trendy party themes for freshers like Vibgyor, dressing up as “famous dead people” and cartoon characters. “We had students dressed up as Popeye and Dexter. It was really cute and colourful,” informs one of the students from LSR’s English dept.
IP College had “Bollywood” as their freshers’ party theme. “We walked on the red carpet in evening gowns and saris in typical Bollywood style. We also had a Miss Fresher competition, where participants dressed as Bollywood actresses danced on desi tracks. It was fun to see girls enacting Sonam Kapoor and Katrina Kaif, while they performed on Sheila ki Jawani or O Re Piya,” shares Anshuli Dagar, first year Maths (Hons) student.
For their freshers’ party on August 12, Gargi College is planning to rock with theme “Colourful Carnival”. Sanya Batra, first year student, shares, “We have to dress up in funky colours, feathers, bikinis and dresses. I’ve bought a funky top and mini skirt. I’m planning to team it up with jazzy furs and masks.”
Having freshers’ party in the campus is now passé, as many are hosting it in city’s pubs and cafes. Rhea Rana, second year, Chemistry (Hons) student, Hans Raj College shares. “As elections are round the corner, many colleges in North campus are planning freshers’ party after that. We will have informal freshers’ party in a pub in Pitampura and the formal campus party will only be decided after the elections. We’re yet to decide the theme.”
Kamla Nehru will host an unofficial party at Manre, Saket on August 19 and the theme for it will be “Devils and Angels”. Sukiriti Lurcha of KNC informs, “I’m planning to go funky for this one with a big hat and vampire look. One of my friends is getting a Dracula look. She will be teaming her black dress with red lipstick and horns.”
Kanika Jain, first year student, Ramjas College, says that seniors have informed them that they will be hosting a club party for freshers in CP in September end.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
