Fear in the air as party season is ready to roll

Celebrations are already in the air as Christmas and New Year are just around the corner. But the recent gangrape case in Munirka has sparked fear and many youngsters are thinking twice about partying late and being out on the road late in the night. Safety is the prime concern, and that’s proving a key factor in this season’s party plans.

Software professional Prachi Shrivastava has decided against stepping out after dark. “I am going to party at someone’s house. This year I will avoid stepping out on New Year’s Eve keeping in mind last year’s Gurgaon case and the recent rape case. The city is literally becoming the sin city of India and I don’t feel safe here,” says Prachi, who also plans to avoid public transport to reach her destination.
Businessman Karan Soni plans to take special care of his female friends. “The Munirka case is definitely a shocker but we are planning to go out with proper arrangement. Public transport is a strict no-no, as is walking in or out of a public place without a safe number of companions. Generally, my friends and I make sure that we are out in a group rather than hanging out alone with our girls. And most importantly, we avoid mixing with unknown and inebriated people,” says Karan.
Analyst at a consultancy firm, Komal adds, “If you act wise, unpleasant things can be avoided. When you come across any unwanted situation, complain to the security staff rather than taking up the fight alone. And the most intelligent thing to do — don’t go to unpopular and shady places.”
While youngsters are taking their own precautions, city nightclubs are also beefing up their security. Ashwani, security in-charge, club Rhino says, “The entire club, including the areas publicly accessible, is monitored round the clock through CCTV cameras. We have also installed a doorframe metal detector machine for additional scanning. Apart from this, the club is securely manned with security officers both from the club as well as the police security around the mall.”
Some clubs have also made special transport arrangements. “We have dedicated tie-ups with the cab providers, and before the clients take the cabs provided by us, we will have a record of the cab driver and details with us. The driver will be called every 30 minutes after leaving the venue to ensure the safety of the guest. Even the client will be called till he/she reaches their destination,” confirms Aman Bhandari of Barka Med.
