So what if South Africa is playing host to FIFA 2010 South Africa World Cup, delhiites are making sure its craziness is felt on the streets here too. Seems like soccer mania is on, full blast, so much so, that youngsters are now adapting cool soccer “head styles” and not, hairstyles in keeping with the spirit of the game.
From getting the look of a football on their head, to having tattoos etched at the back, and on top of their heads, youngsters are reflecting soccer’s spirit in every possible way.
Says hairstylist Amzadd Habib, “We have a number of clients who come just to get their hair chopped to have a football look. It’s more about dressing their heads, than the hair, as most of them are turning bald. Not just that, there are many who want to get colourful soccer tattoos on the top of their heads for a different look.”
Stylists say that most people prefer to copy their favourite player. Rishi Gupta, the owner of Trendz Unisex Salons, says, “People are going in for spicy hairstyles. Some come to us asking to copy the hairstyle of lets say Torres or Ronaldo. We had a client who came to us with a picture of his favourite player and asked us for the same style. Some are even getting their hair chopped to look like a football, or they ask us to add the colours of a country’s flag that they are rooting for.”
With the capital buzzing with excitement, there are “Soccer special” offers available for both the sexes. “We have a standard rate of Rs 250 for men, and Rs 500 for women who want to get soccer special hairdos. With the World Cup fever on, we are offering tattoos and hairstyles,” says Varun Manchanda, from Sashas.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
