Fly for the freedom of expression
The idea of celebrating Independence can be different for everyone. To celebrate the Indian independence on 15th August in a different manner, three 24-year-olds have stood up and taken charge to motivate others to live a free life. A life that is full of fun— one that reminds you of the relieved childhood days.
Mudit Kalra, who runs an event organistaion firm ByeDefault that organises alternative events, started Fly To Fight — a kite flying festival amid music at Nehru Park — last year with his two friends Ankush Sharma and Kanish Phogat.
He says, as a kid he used to go to Nehru Park for kite flying almost every Independence Day. “One day it struck me that the culture is not there anymore, I spoke to my friends and we started the ‘Fly to Fight Festival’. Last year we called some music bands from all across Delhi and invited people. There was a gathering of almost 400 people,” says Mudit.
To make the festival relatable to the participants, the team wove it around the theme “corruption” last year. “With Anna Hazare’s movement against corruption, it made sense to do that,” says Mudit, who got kites that had anti-corruption messages on them.
Taking the festival one step further, this year, the team has again organised a kite flying festival. However, this times there’s no theme. Mudit says that the idea this time is to be a free soul. “It’s a platform where for one day people can just live the way they want to. The idea is to celebrate our democracy and independence,” he says. Hence, this time the kites have messages of freedom imprinted on them.
