Fun with sports

The option of grabbing a beer in a new alluring ambience has always enticed pub-goers in the capital. And if a new place promises to nurture one’s love for sports, we don’t see any reason why people won’t give it a try. Blame it on the recently concluded FIFA World Cup or the mega annual sport events; pubs in the city are discovering the spirit of games by taking up sports-oriented themes. Be it popular sports like cricket and football or the not-so-popular ones like bowling and the elitist golf, pub-hoppers today are flooded with options in the city to hangout.
Swinging golf clubs in a golf course might not be a very good idea in the city’s scorching heat, but that’s exactly what sports enthusiasts are doing at Golfworx in Ambience Mall.
With a reputation of being a paradise for golf lovers in the capital, the pub aims to encourage more and more people to take up the sport seriously. “We organised India’s first indoor golf tournament for corporates. Till now the response has been overwhelming. In fact, youngsters are more curious to know about the game,” says Sujoy Ganguly, general manager of Golfworx.
No discussion on sports in India is complete without mentioning cricket, and Howzatt at Galaxy Hotel is cashing on this fact. “We incorporated the cricket theme for an edge over other microbreweries in the city. We screen every sport, but the focus is on cricket. The entire ambience and designing of the place has cricket as its theme. We organise match nights and give offers to those who can correctly predict the outcome of a game,” says Hemant Nutyal, restaurant manager.
That is also the case with the newly opened Manchester United Café. Though the name is compelling enough to make city’s football fans wear their soccer boots and visit it, it is one of the pioneer pubs dedicated entirely to an EPL club, and guess what, fans love it. “I had gone to one of the branches of Manchester United Café in Japan and I loved it. If you are there on match days and not sporting the club’s jersey, chances are that you might feel like a stranger. And the same is the case with the one in Delhi. Though a bit expensive it’s worth a try,” avers 29-year-old Gaurav Goswami, an investment executive and an ardent football fan.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
