Funky classics top Diwali haute-list

A little twist here, a slight turn there can make your traditional outfits more trendy, say designers, suggesting fashionistas to play around with the hemline, use light embellishments and team it with funky accessories.

“Pairing the short kurti or kaftan with asymmetrical or layered skirts is a great fusion look one can try this Diwali. Bejewelled T-shirts or backless tops with skirts are another cool match. One can also go for panelled saris, that can be worn over jeans,” says designer Nida Mahmood.
For those who are bored of free flowing anarkali-style suits, designer Pam Mehta suggests, “Tweak it this festive season to give it a western touch by playing with the ‘kalis’. Anarkalis with raised or dropped hemline are available in the market. One can make it more interesting by controlling kalis on one side and playing on the other by giving a sharper neckline and repositioning colours.”
Designer Kammali Mehta believes, “Since Diwali is all about sparkle and colours, people like to experiment with bright shades. Embroidery and bling is a complete no this season. This Diwali people are asking for lighter work but more of styling.”
Even men are experimenting with fashion and colours this Diwali. “The colour palette has become contemporary. Orange, red, sky blue, navy blue and rust are in. The long, embroidered kurta with traditional bottoms is still perfect for Diwali. As is the flowing Pathani suit or the sherwani,” says designer Sunil Mehra.
“Since the mild winter has started setting in, men are going for Nehru jackets in various shades like ink-blue, bottle green. Velvet and silk textures are doing well this season,” he adds.
Designer Shouger Merchant Doshi has used a panorama of colours in her newly launched collection. “Elegant sarees, brocade blouse, anarkalis, lehengas in hues of gold, red, orange, maroon is just the thing for the festive season. Aesthetically blend colours, with flawless clean cuts and provocative fits to accentuate curves. Half-and-half and ready-to-wear sarees are trending this season,” says Shouger.
Sheers are also catching up. “Narrow cut sheer or fine organza shirts are a great base and will work well with almost everything in your closet. Break through the clutter of ordinary with a dramatic one-side gherdaar textured jacket or a one side kalidar jacket. Angrakha wrap kurtas and wrap dresses are a great way to make a statement this Diwali,” says designer Kiran Uttam Ghosh.
Pep up your style quotient this Diwali!

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
