Gadgets give men a sense of freedom

Be they expensive mobile phones, play stations, iPads, a kindle, laptops, cars or electronic equipment, men share a special relationship with gizmos.

“It’s an amazing world of information out there. Whether it is books, games or apps dealing with fitness, traffic, hangout places, etc. these new gadgets have it all. Who would want a nagging girlfriend instead?” jokes media-person Karnam Trehan. “One can get his work done on the move and that too, immediately. Gadgets act like stress-busters and are big time-consumers. They are addictive to the extent of one being obsessed and highly possessive about them,” he adds.
So is it easy for women to understand this fondness that men have for gizmos? Psychiatrist Girish Banwari says, “Women adorn themselves with jewellery and men with gadgets. It gives them a sense of freedom and power. Just as men would never understand a woman’s fetish for clothes, jewellery and make-up, it is tough for women to understand why men romance gadgets. Fidgeting with gadgets is akin to masturbation, it gives men a ‘high’.”
Explaining the relationship Sunil Saini, business analyst with Standard Chartered says, “It is the same relationship that kids share with their toys. Just that these smart toys are more useful and expensive. It’s like the attraction that girls have towards bags and accessories.”
Banwari feels that stress also plays a major factor in the men and gizmo equation. “Women tend to internalise stress, while men externalise it by using substances of abuse or by getting hooked onto gadgets,” he says.
“A classy car, the latest mobile phone, expensive watches and other gadgets help in impressing girls. They are the new way to show off the 'taste for the latest', advancement and knowledge,” says Shravan Rathore, an IIT graduate.
“Gadgets are primarily meant for making life easy after a hard day's work. Be it phones, game consoles, tablets or iPads, I love spending time on them and usually remain up-to-date. However, that does not mean I do not spend quality time with my family,” says Prashant Ahuja, an MNC employee.
That women are lured to gizmo freaks is probably yet another reason why men may use gadgets so profusely. And talking about men and gadgets, there are even advertising campaigns dedicated to how men swoon over their gizmos!
Romancing the gizmo may just take on a whole new set of meanings!

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
