Gadgets score over idiot box
The worry is not that kids are just glued to the idiot box, but the question is how the youth don’t fancy television much any more. According to a recent nationwide survey, television is passé and computers, laptops and mobiles are the new modes of entertainment for the youth.
For many representing the fast-forward generation, the preferred choice is instant connectivity through Facebook and Twitter, not only through computers but also their mobile phones. “TV is certainly not a cool thing anymore. Modern day gadgets mean information and entertainment at your own will, at any possible place,” says Rajat Sharma, 19, a student.
Rajat adds that he gets all the major updates regarding news and events on his cellphone and has installed various interesting software. “My cellphone and laptop come loaded with fun accessories and additional space, as per my requirement, something impossible for a TV which is of course a family thing. In fact, even a computer is not personal anymore, while a smartphone is,” says Faizan Ali, a student.
Young professional Navjot Gill adds that TV has nothing interesting to appeal to her. “Internet being the medium of the day is something that I am hooked on to,” she says. “I cannot name a single TV show which has been created keeping the youth of today in mind. It’s a very disappointing situation,” she adds.
