A gaming Society
We’ve all heard of debating societies, theatre societies, fine arts societies etc in colleges, but have you ever seen a gaming society? Well, St. Stephen’s College of Delhi University just so happens to have one. Founded in early September last year, the society isn’t officially endorsed by the college, but still represents the college at various tournaments. It isn’t surprising to see the birth of this society with the increase in the number and significance of gaming tournaments at all the college festivals.
I had a chance to meet up with the founders of the society. Clifford, Dandiwar and Dawa, all currently in second year at St Stephen’s College. Naturally, the first thing on my mind was “why gaming?”All of them had so much to say on the topic, its hard to fit it all in. They said gaming was very much a part of their everyday life and what was happening in and around college, gossip didn’t really matter.
“Gaming gives us two things,” Clifford replied. “An outlet for us to vent our frustration and that space we need to escape the monotony of college studies,” he says. So, for all you parents out there, who think gaming is a waste of time, think again! They specialise in a wide array of games ranging from Call of Duty, to Counter Strike to World of Warcraft and the ever so tough DOTA. They can usually be found at their main hangout, Extreme Arena; a PC gaming café in North Campus, DU. They’ve represented their college in a few gaming tournaments around campus, SRCC, Hansraj and a couple at Extreme Arena, where they even won Call of Duty.
Even though they’re just a small gang of gamers, they try to be as active as possible with regular meets. Even though they aren’t officially approved as a society by the college, they like to think of themselves as representatives of the college. They’ve come a long way, from three friends who enjoyed gaming to the founding fathers of a society that will endure for years to come.
