Winning a beauty contest was never a part of her plans, but she is now gearing up to represent India in the Miss Earth peagent this year. Sobhita Dhulipala’s life took a pleasant turn when she was crowned the first runner up in the Pond’s Femina Miss India 2013 in Mumbai. Since then it’s been a fairytale journey.

The bubbly beauty queen likes to go by her own rules, and says, “My life is an experiment, and I enjoy living every bit of it.” The 21-year-old model was born in Tenali, Andhra Pradesh. Soon her family moved to Visakhapatnam, where she spent most of her childhood. Speaking about her transition from a nerd to a glam queen, Sobhita informs, “I was a very studious girl and got great marks in exams. I never thought of becoming a model and never trained myself to be a beauty contestant. My father is a marine engineer and like any traditional South Indian girl I got trained in classical music and learned Bharatnatyam and Kuchipudi.”
Sobhita, who is currently pursuing her post graduate diploma in Business and Corporate Law from Symbiosis University, was crowned Miss Adventurous at the Miss India contest. She mentions that she is very spontaneous and loves to travel, and adds, “In India, I think every girl secretly nurtures a dream to be Miss India, for me it happened all of a sudden. I was in Hyderabd for a family wedding last year, when I saw the contest billboard and thought of giving it a shot. I was really surprised when I was shortlisted for it and after passing all the levels I made it to the final round. When I was crowned Miss Earth India, I couldn’t believe that I had accomplished something, until I saw my mother crying with joy.”
Sobhita, who has the Miss Earth beauty contest lined up in coming months, is excited and says, “I think being honest in life really helps in making your dreams come true. Competeing with so many pretty girls wasn’t a cakewalk, however I feel that my biggest advantage was that I was curious, eager to know more and straightforward. I enjoy competition, but in a healthy manner, mostly till the time I get to learn something out of it. For the Miss Earth contest I have been grooming myself and keeping a check on my diet and exercise regime. I do yoga, pilates and cardio exercises to stay fit. I don’t believe in looking skinny and I rarely eat junk food. I am very excited to be representing my country on a global platform, and I hope I do my best.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
