Gem of your life

Diamonds are a girl’s best friend. Whether it is Lara Dutta who flaunted a huge rock on her ring finger after getting engaged to Mahesh Bhupati recently or Shilpa Shetty, who now and then takes everyone’s breath away with her chunky diamond jewellery.
But surprisingly, it’s not only solitaires that celebs love to flaunt, even gemstones like sapphire, ruby, emerald are becoming popular. While Megan Fox wore yellow gold and emerald earrings at the Golden Globe Awards, Drew Barrymore flaunted a moonstone and Emily Blunt wore ruby earrings. Back home, Salman Khan flaunts a turquoise bracelet. Shilpa Shetty, besides wearing diamonds, also flaunts an emerald and Amitabh Bachchan sports a blue sapphire.
Interestingly, taking a cue from these stars are youngsters, who now are getting interested in the gemstones. At a recent conference on gemstones by astrologer Indranil Mitra, the popularity of these gems was highlighted. He elaborated on how a particular stone influences one’s life depending upon one’s planet, ascendant. Asterism, was another topic of discussion.
According to Mitra, while youngsters are interested in astrology and gems, most of them are not really aware about the effects and more importantly the side-effects if a wrong stone is worn.
“Most youngsters follow astrology of the West, which is governed by your sun sign, which is not very accurate. The real affect can only be achieved if Indian astrological science is followed,” he says, adding that the nine planets, 12 zodiac signs and 27 asterisks decide the chart of a person’s life on which a stone is prescribed.
Ruchi Tandon, a teacher who attended the conference, says that before she started believing in astrology, she was not aware that wearing a wrong stone can be harmful. “Since the last three years, I’ve been really interested in the subject and have studied many cases and have found that destructive things can happen if one wears a wrong stone,” she says.
Mitra says that one should be very careful about these things. He adds that wearing stones as earrings or necklaces don’t provide enough cover if you are trying to solve a crisis or problem.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
