Gen Y opts for convertible fashion that does double duty

If your ring doesn’t fit your finger anymore, slip it through a chain and flaunt it as a pendant. Who says a neckpiece is only meant to flatter your neck? You can use it as a bracelet too. Yes, stylish youngsters are taking to convertible fashion and exploring multi-purpose options in clothes and jewellery.
So, a scarf can be a sarong and a mini skirt can double up as a tube top. “To me it’s about multiplying my wardrobe at the price of one item,” says Rashita Sachdev, a 23-year-old fashionista. So, a long chunky neckpiece can be worn in a number of ways. Wear it as a cross from your shoulder or with multiple turns on your wrist. A long skirt can be pulled up high to make an above-the-knee tube dress out of it. “It’s a creative approach to style and creating your own individual fashion statement,” says stylist Gurpreet Singh.
Even fashion designers are creating multi-wear stuff for young buyers. “Jumpsuits are a rage this season, and there are around 10 different ways of wearing it. International labels have come up with ‘adaptable’ versions for the same. There are Converse shoes which can be worn as slip-ons or formal office shoes with adjustable heels, which are gaining steam internationally. Hi-end bags by Fendi which one can carry as a clutch are also quite popular,” says fashion designer and stylist Austin.
Rather than investing in expensive jewellery pieces which can be worn only once, young brides “are happy with multi-purpose pieces like huge detachable earrings.” Designer Monica Gulati’s recent collection comprises floral brooch pins which can be used as hair clips, sari pins, bag charms and also lockets. “It’s not always about money. And for cash-strapped youth, it’s more about reinventing yourself,” she says.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
