Around a decade ago, parents were scandalised if their teenage daughter announced her passion of becoming a DJ! However, the times have changed and a career that was not much sought-after has become quite popular among young girls.

Thanks to the numerous parties being held all over India. And, if you thought it was still solely a male stronghold — think again! Today there are many women who know how to set the dance floor on fire.
Take DJ Kary Arora, who is one of the first Indian women to DJ professionally. She shares, “There is a lot of scope in terms of job opportunities. One can perform at fests, music events, private parties, corporate parties both nationally and internationally. Plus, if you love travel and meet new people everyday, DJing is a suitable career choice.”
Kary who is also trained in playing keyboards, says, “Djing is not just about playing music back to back. If you are a passionate music lover and are well acquainted with technology, you can even produce your own music.”
Similarly, there is DJ Rink, a well-known DJ on the party circuit in Mumbai and Delhi. She says, “I believe Djing is a smart career choice for girls. The pay scale has increased drastically over the years. Depending on the occasion and the client, it may range from `10,000 to `5-6 lakhs per gig. Plus, you are your own boss!”
A model-cum-Dj Barkha Kaul who has spun turntables at IPL party of Shah Rukh Khan says, “Just good looks and glam personality won’t take you anywhere. Being an artist, when you perform, you realise it’s not an easy job. At clubs and parties, people are thrilled to know they have a female DJ. Aunties especially, often write their requests on tissue paper and send, they probably feel proud that a girl can rock the dance floor!”
Young DJ Prerna believes it is her hard work and unique choice of music that brings her a hug fan following. But there is a downside to all this glam“Some people love to party and get drunk over good music; but some only come to stare at you. They don’t realise that the girl behind the console isn’t there to perform an item song.” says young and aspiring DJ Apeksha.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
