Going Mad-onna over Lourdes’ line

Remember the sexy Material Girl appeal that Madonna managed right through the 80s with her uncomplicated layered dressing, fish net stocking, embellished jackets, tucked in shirts and tattered shorts? Yes, that’s the oomph, the pop diva now aims to share with fans and fashionistas through her debut signature line “Material Girl” along with her 13-year-old daughter Lourdes. And the young bombshell has already started blogging about the fashion venture. The pop star has given her full credit. “I really like the way Lola (as she calls her daughter) dresses, and I think this line is an extension of her taste,” she was quoted saying.
Interestingly, her foray into fashion doesn’t come as a shock to the glamour world. “Many Indian and international designers are working with huge bows and jackets with broad shoulders. So, a lot of 80s is already in. What Madonna has done is she has played safe and is coming up with an extension of the existing trend,” says designer Nitin Bal Chauhan.
“More than clothing and the kind of garments and silhouettes she creates, it’s about the label and name involved. So, people would be paying attention to the name rather than the cut and appeal of the outfit she markets,” opines designer Shantanu Mehra.
The collection, for many is a reflection of her personality. “Madonna is a fashion icon, but the present line is less for the fashion conscious and more for those who love Madonna and see themselves in her shadow. It’s also a personal branding exercise,” says designer Anjalee Kapoor, who adds that the line comprising leather bras and pointed boots is trendy and party-ish.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
