Good looks are ticket to fame

According to a study in Israel, good looking politicians tend to get more television news coverage. We asked youngsters in the capital if they think this theory holds water.
“Young and dynamic leaders who belong to political dynasties are well groomed and educated, therefore get more coverage than leaders who may have struggled and emerged from the grassroots. My vote goes to the dapper Rahul Gandhi as he not only looks incredible, but if one looks beyond his cute dimples, his work speaks volumes about his convictions. He is keen to induct young people in the party and provides opportunity to talented and hardworking people. So, undeniably he gets coverage for the right reasons,” says Surbhi Tandon, a Delhi University student.
It’s no surprise that charm always opens doors for you and puts you in the spotlight, whether you like it or not. “In a politician’s case, it’s different as his work will take him forward and he cannot rely just on his wardrobe. Today’s young suave leaders don’t take their position or lineage for granted. They dress smartly, talk sense and conduct themselves in a dignified manner in the public arena,” avers Akhil Chaudhary, who works in a fashion house.
But who can deny that they don’t like to look at a leader who not only speaks well, but looks pleasant too. In campaigns, it’s an added bonus to have posters of good looking people. Grace Dechen Chankapa, a management executive says, “In marketing, a politician’s look is used as a front end strategy. I like Sachin Pilot, Rahul Gandhi and Jyotiraditya Scindia. They are the faces that can represent modern India globally. They have a certain sense of understated style and pizzazz that speaks volumes about their personality.”
many youngsters also believe that politicians today are trendsetters. The younger ones are recognised for their clean cuts, sharp suits, starched kurta-pajamas and plain speaking skills.
Upasna Lall, a marketing executive, says, “People are much more aware and with the media explosion, all their moves are being monitored constantly. Therefore there are more chances of them being written and spoken about, so work wise they make sure they are on track. Moreover, when you power dress you command more respect. I’ve always admired Omar Abdullah and Sachin Pilot is simply dishy.”
Designer Poonam Bhagat says that politicians today have evolved their own sense of style and this have given them an edge over the older generation. “They are more willing to connect with the youth and their simple elegance is what is appealing. I think a kurta pyjama is as good as a well-tailored suit, it just depends on the occasion,” she adds.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
