Gorgeous winner in much awaited GoW

She first came to public attention by winning the coveted title on Channel V’s talent spotting show Get Gorgeous. But Anurita Jha stunned audiences with her rustic role in Anurag Kashyap’s critically acclaimed Gangs of Wasseypur.

For Anurita however, the film was just Act I — its second part, due for release in August will have the model-turned-actress play a more pivotal part in the proceedings. “In the first part of the film, audiences saw me playing the role of Shamma Parveen, who was the link between the two warring families. The story does take a different turn in part two because of Shamma’s entry, but I can’t reveal anything beyond that,” says Anurita.
What she does divulge is how much her enhanced role in part two has satisfied her creatively, adding, “As an actor, I’m always hungry for more challenging roles.” It was this hunger for a challenge that prompted Anurita to shift from a successful career as a model to acting. “Modelling was great, but as a person, I don’t like to stagnate,” Anurita says. “It is very important for me to grow and do things that excite me, things that challenge me to do better. The transition wasn’t that difficult, but I did have to work on myself, do an acting course and theatre workshops.”
The transition was also made easier by the fact that Anurita knew she wanted to “make the next obvious leap”. But she wanted to be sure of herself before taking the cinematic plunge and Gangs of Wasseypur proved to her that acting was “definitely something that excited” her.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
