Hack You(r) Tube

With 2 billion videos being watched every day, Youtube has almost become synonymous with uploading, viewing and sharing videos. Anybody with an Internet connection and a computer or mobile device can easily upload a video to Youtube in a matter of a few minutes and can share it with everybody else. Not only has Youtube become the primary video viewing medium on computers, but also almost all mobile phones (and many TVs and gaming consoles) ship from the factory with built in apps and support for Youtube. Even IPL 3 chose Youtube as their preferred online broadcast channel! One annoying restriction that Youtube imposes on its millions of users is that you can easily watch and share videos, but you can’t download any of the videos and watch them offline at your convenience.
Wouldn’t it be amazing if you could do that? A simple hack is to use various video download websites like www.savevid.com and www.keepvid.com which allow you to download all your favourite videos from Youtube and other popular video streaming websites (like Metacafe, Youku, Tudou and others). Just copy the URL of the streaming video that you wish to download and paste into either of these websites and start downloading! Voila! If you are like me and sometimes like to connect your laptop to your TV and watch streaming Youtube videos on the large TV screen, then you must have noticed that the videos look quite distorted. To resolve this problem Youtube has come out with the super cool Youtube XL (youtube. com/xl) that plays videos optimised for large screens! Finally this week I would like to leave you with some of the most popular videos of all time on Youtube (see box).

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
