Hair today, gone tomorrow
Prince Williams’ prominent bald patch may not have hogged the headline space his wife’s attire did, but it didn’t go unnoticed either. While it got millions across the world wondering why the prince hadn’t gone for some hair weaving treatment, the man himself seemed quite at ease with his thinning blonde glory. And his care-a-da** attitude is being seen as a sign of changing times in male grooming, according to men folk and experts alike.
The “scaled look” seems to be catching up not just among the middle-aged and men in their late twenties, but among teenagers as well. Says image consultant Chhaya Momaya, “Men are now realising the comfort level of being different. It’s definitely not a sign of disregard for physical appearance. Instead it’s all about being comfortable with oneself. When you are at ease with your looks, it shows.” However, getting the look right requires some effort. “When you are blessed with a perfect shape of the head, the scaled look will automatically suit you. But the less fortunate ones can always concentrate on building a toned physique that compensates for a receding hairline. Also if you accessorise with studs, earrings, some cool aviators, you have it all!” she says.
Even those who haven’t given style that much thought are not losing hair over balding issues. Says Joseph Flynn, a software marketing consultant engineer, “It’s not that I am suffering from male pattern baldness, but I know that it will come sooner or later and this might sound strange, but I am looking forward to it. Bald men have the aura of an achiever; they are confident and manly. Some girls find it sexy. Think Bruce Willis.”
The fairer sex agrees. Says 28-year-old Shamika Sood, an interior designer, “Nine out of 10 times balding guys are much more confident of themselves than their hairy counterparts. I’ve seen these men use this confidence to their advantage in social gatherings and they come across as genuine because they are not so touchy about their looks. And these are qualities that impress women.”
Young adults too want to embrace the “mature” look. Gaurika Narang, mother of an 18-year-old says, “My son wants to shave his head. But he wants to do it systematically, by working on his physique first, to perfect the look.”
